Prospective Students

The Emory Dance Program has helped me identify who I am and helped me develop a passion that I knew was always there but never listened to. Through its supportive faculty, academic dance classes, and technique classes, Emory Dance has pushed me to grow into a “smart dancer.” I am now aware of the history of dance, the analysis of dance movement, as well as my alignment and important health principles for dancers. As a student who did not know anything about modern dance before college, I would say that Emory Dance has done something amazing for me: it helped me grow wings and let me fly under its guidance.

Dear Dance Prospective,

Thank you for your interest in Emory University’s Dance and Movement Studies Program. The Emory Dance Program offers a well-rounded course of dance study within the larger context of a liberal arts education, culminating in a bachelor of arts (B.A.) degree.

We are based in contemporary modern dance, emphasizing improvisation, choreography, and performance because we value individualism. Technical training in contemporary, classical, and cultural dance forms balance with somatic practices in order to build a relationship between the mind and the body.  Students also take courses in dance theory and criticism, movement analysis, pedagogy, stage and lighting design, contemporary issues, and history. The dance faculty create an environment where students feel empowered to move authentically, investigate movement, and deepen their practice.

If you plan to apply to Emory and are interested in the Dance Program, make plans to visit the studios and theater, take a technique class or sit in onanother type of dance course, and meet with a faculty member. During your visit, you will also have an opportunity to speak with current dance students. Please fill out our visit form at least two weeks in advance of your visit. If you have questions about our program, or about scheduling a visit, please contact our program coordinator, Anne Walker, at awalker@emory.edu or 404-727-7266.

Your journey in college can be full of creativity, collaborations, critical thinking, and self-discovery.Let Emory Dance, a community of artists, cultivate your passion for moving.

Warmly,
Lori C. Teague, Director of Emory Dance
