Omelika Kuumba is a native of Brooklyn, NY and a graduate of Spelman College. Kuumba is a drummer, dancer, choreographer, cultural arts educator, and is co-founder and director of Giwayen Mata, a dance, percussion, and vocal ensemble. She has studied under the direction of master dancers and percussionists in this country and in Senegal, West Africa. Other highlights of her career include performing at the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games, teaching choreography at Trollwood Performing Arts School in North Dakota, and teaching music and choreography in Stuttgart, Germany and Hastings, England. She is a professor of African Dance Forms at Spelman College, teaches in the Spelman College Children’s Drama and Dance Program, directs Ashietu, the Sisters Chapel African Dance Ministry, and is a guest instructor and choreographer at Onyx Dance School.
