Guest Artists and Residencies

Guest artist performances and multifaceted residencies play a key role in dance and movement studies education. The Flora Glenn Candler Series, and the Donna and Marvin Schwartz Artist-in-Residence programs support the presentation of iconic dance companies and innovative artists. These artists enhance how we engage in vital societal topics.

Current Artist Spotlight

Urban Bush Women, October 20-22, 2022

Urban Bush Women (UBW), founded in 1984 by choreographer Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, is a Brooklyn-based performance ensemble and dance that seeks to bring the untold and under-told histories and stories to light through dance. They create and perform from a woman-centered perspective and as members of the African Diaspora community in order to create a more equitable balance of power in the dance world and beyond. Urban Bush Women will present three performances of Legacy + Lineage + Liberation, which celebrates the power of Women(+) in an evening of classic works that transcend genres and amplify the voices of Women(+) of color.

These performances are part of the Flora Glenn Candler Concert Series.

Recent Artist Spotlight

Xan Burley and Alex Springer, Fall 2021

Dance and choreography duo Xan Burley and Alex Springer spent two weeks at Emory in Fall 2021 as Donna and Marvin Schwartz Artists-in-Residence. While on campus, they taught contemporary modern technique classes and a master class open to the public, and created a new work for the Emory Dance Company that was performed as part of the company’s fall concert, November 18-20, 2021.

Described as "Annoyingly fantastic dancers. Just perfect in how they parsed momentum, suspension, initiation," by dance educator and writer Susan Van Pelt, Burley and Springer are generous dance technique teachers. Xan and Alex’s choreography has been presented by the most prestigious dance venues in New York City and beyond, including the American Dance Festival and Jacobs Pillow. Before attending Smith College, where they both earned master of fine arts degrees, they danced with the highly acclaimed Doug Varone and Dancers. They are currently faculty members in the School of the Arts of the University of Florida.
