Major and Minor

The study of dance is perhaps the most unique and all-encompassing pursuit in the fine arts. It involves the total exploration of the self—emotional, intellectual, and kinesthetic. The program develops students' awareness and appreciation of movement in all its diverse forms and their ability to communicate through non-verbal expression.

Dance develops insights into a broad range of studies; therefore it plays a viable role in the liberal arts education. Since dance is so multi-faceted, it enhances the student's preparation for a variety of careers.

Current students must meet with a dance faculty advisor prior to declaring a major or minor. Once you have met with a faculty advisor, declare your major or minor in OPUS.

Emory Dance Welcomes Oxford Students from Emory Dance Program.

We want to make your transition into the Emory Dance and Movement Studies Program as seamless as possible. The information below will provide you with a practical sequence of courses so that you can discover relationships between these courses over two years.

Oxford students CAN complete the dance minor in two years provided there are no conflicts with courses needed for their major degree.

If you are an Oxford continue and have questions about any of the information below, please contact Emory Dance Program transfer advisor Sally Radell: sradell@emory.edu or 404-727-2835. She can also assign you a student dance mentor.

DANCE MINOR (minimum of 19 credit hours)

  • THEA_OX 120 - Introduction to Acting (3 hours) - will satisfy a three hour dance minor elective

Dance Minor Overview

View all dance minor requirements by clicking the tab to the left. A few notes:

  • DANC 207R - Emory Dance Company (1-2 hours): You can audition for the Emory Dance Company every semester. You must also be enrolled in a technique class to accept a role.
  • Technique classes are repeatable. They are offered every semester, along with improvisation and world dance forms.
  • You are required to take one 3-4 hour elective course. Tailor that to your personal goals. The course atlas can be helpful for advance planning.

DANCE MAJOR (minimum of 33 credit hours)

It is more difficult for students from Oxford to complete the dance major degree in two years because the eight-hour technique requirement can only be satisfied with intermediate to advanced level technique courses, which are not currently offered at Oxford College. In addition, there is a performance requirement of 4 credit hours. Please click the tab at the top to view the dance major requirements.

Students with extensive technical training may be able to complete the dance major if:

1. they graduate Oxford one semester early and take multiple dance courses in the spring of their sophomore year at Emory College.

or

2. they get special permission from Academic Affairs at Oxford, the Emory Dance Program transfer advisor, and the dean of Emory College to take upper-level dance courses at Emory while still attending Oxford College.

Students who pursue this academic pathway should work carefully with advisors at both Oxford College and Emory to map out a schedule of courses. Professors in the Dance Program will help students determine the appropriate level.

The following courses at Oxford College can be used to satisfy dance major requirements at Emory:

  • PE_OX 151 - Dance Improvisation (1 hour) - equivalent to DANC 150R at Emory College
  • DANC_OX 220 - History of Western Concert Dance (4 hours)
